Forgot My Ipod Nano Lock Code

How do I unlock my iPod Nano (3rd Gen)?
I have a 3rd Generation Ipod Nano (4G) and I forgot my screen-lock code (I haven't used it in a while). In the past, I would simply plug it into my laptop and reset it via usb. But now I no longer have the same laptop and the pc I currently use (Windows XP) will not recognize the device in iTunes or even the "my computer" file. How to make the pc read the iPod so I can reset the device? I already updated iTunes on the pc.
I attempted to reset with the menu+center button controls (as instructed on the iTunes website), but the iPod is still locked.
The pc will not read the iPod. I know the drive is working correctly because the iPod still charges when connected to the usb.
If you can’t remember your passcode, you must restore the iPod software.
If you restore, all data is erased from iPod, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data. All iPod settings are restored to their original state.
1 Make sure you have an Internet connection and have installed the latest version of iTunes from www.apple.com/itunes.
2 Connect iPod to your computer.
3 In iTunes, select iPod in the source list and click the Summary tab.
4 Click “Check for Update.” iTunes tells you if there’s a newer version of the iPod software available.
5 Click Update to install the latest version of the software. Or click Restore to restore iPod to its original settings and erase all data and media on iPod. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the restore process.
